Sony Sets Up Huge Conference in Late February, Could Introduce PlayStation 4

From X-bit Labs: Sony Computer Entertainment America has issued invitations to its annual “Destination PlayStation” event for game media and supply chain executives, which is scheduled to happen in late February. Many believe that Sony is going to take an opportunity and unleash the fourth-generation PlayStation, or at least some of its elements.

“We are excited to announce the 13th annual Destination PlayStation event, hosted by Sony Computer Entertainment America, February 25-28, 2013. This year’s destination brings us back to the picturesque Sonoran Desert and the luxurious Fairmont Scottsdale Princess resort. As our guests, you’ll be treated to food, drink, play, and a first look at all the amazing new releases coming from Sony Computer Entertainment America Entertainment in 2013,” the official invitation from SCEA reads.

Keeping in mind that many financial analysts predicted the launch of PlayStation 4 (Odin, Orbis) in 2013, it is logical to expect Sony to, at least, flash its next-generation console in February to keep sales of current PlayStation 3 consoles and gamer in a stable position. It is also logical to expect Sony to show its next console to partners and reveal monetization options. Still, officially, a glimpse at the PlayStation Next is out of the plat at Destination PlayStation Event.

While Sony has officially confirmed development of PS Next, it never commented on its actual name. Some believe it will be called PlayStation 4, others claim it will be branded as PlayStation Orbis, different sources imply that the name will be PlayStation Omni. Keeping in mind Sony’s typical naming schemes, “Orbis” and “Omni” could be just code-names of hardware development kits.

What is currently known about the PlayStation 4 is that it is based on a microprocessor and a custom Radeon HD graphics processing unit (GPU) designed by AMD. Those chips should be powerful enough to support video games in 4096*2160 or 3840*2160 (4K) resolution and video games in stereo-3D mode in 1920*1080 (1080p) resolution.
