Sony Admits Challenges with Managing Resources Between PS 3 and PS 4

From X-bit Labs: Sony Computer Entertainment plans to continue supporting PlayStation 3 after the company's PlayStation 4 "Orbis" hits the market. Still, already today the firm faces challenges when it comes to managing resources of its in-house game developers as they have to work on titles both for the current-generation and the next-generation video game consoles.

"We are nowhere close to giving up on PS3. When you look at the UK market, it is easy to say that current consoles are fading. But if you look at PS3, it is holding up a lot better than others, so it warrants support. [...] We do have a challenge to manage [resources between PS3 and PS4], particularly in terms of dev studio resources. The more platforms you have, and the amount of rich content you have to deliver on all the systems you are supporting, clearly puts pressure on decisions made across the studio network, which is something we are battling with," said Fergal Gara, managing director of PlayStation UK, in an interview with CVG web-site.

Based on unofficial information, Sony PlayStation 4 will be completely different from the PS3. For example, it will not be compatible with existing games, which causes massive challenges for game developers. What is currently known about the PlayStation 4 is that it is based on a microprocessor and a graphics processing unit (GPU) designed by Advanced Micro Devices. Apparently, those chips will be powerful enough to support video games in 4096*2160 (4K) resolution and video games in stereo-3D mode in 1920*1080 (1080p) resolution.

The focus of the PlayStation 4 "Orbis" will be fundamentally the same as that of the PlayStation 2 and the PlayStation 3: to sustain a long-term life-cycle and stay relevant both for core gamers as well as for more casual users. Given the fact what is going on with PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita now, one can expect even deeper cross-platform integration in the next generation of consoles.

It is presently expected that the PlayStation 4 “Orbis” is on track for release for the holiday season in late 2013.
